Buying a whole cask means buying whisky at the lowest point of its life and holding it as it matures. Industry publications have reported historical returns in the range of 5.5% – 20% per year for cask whisky, and whisky has repeatedly ranked among the strongest-performing passion assets of the decade, though past performance is no guarantee of future results, and values can fall as well as rise.
And unlike gold, if the market ever disappoints you, you can bottle your asset and drink it.

Time does the work. As the whisky ages in American oak, the evaporating "angel's share" concentrates character, value historically tied to age and scarcity, not daily markets.

You own the cask
You hold documented title to a specific, numbered cask, the maturing spirit and the barrel itself, not a share, note or pooled fund. Ownership is recorded in a written agreement with full documentation before any payment.
Stored & insured for you
Your cask stays in a government-bonded, insured warehouse in Germany, Ireland or South Africa. You don't take physical possession while it matures; duty and excise are only triggered when spirit is removed from bond.
Three ways to exit
When you choose to exit you can bottle the whisky, each bottle personalised with your name, unique cask number, year of distilling and bottle number (excise and VAT apply), sell the cask onward to another buyer, or simply keep maturing it. A buyer and a given sale price are never guaranteed, and selling can take time.
- Your capital is at risk. You may get back less than you paid, and could lose your entire outlay.
- No guaranteed return or income. A cask pays no interest or dividend, and no return of any kind is promised or guaranteed by Blomendahl / B-Distillery.
- Historical figures are not a forecast. The 5.5%–20% p.a. range is a historical sector figure reported by third parties; past performance does not indicate future results.
- It is illiquid. There is no daily market; finding a buyer for a cask can take considerable time and is not assured.
- Costs reduce any outcome. VAT, excise, storage beyond the included period, transport, insurance and bottling all reduce net returns.
- Not a deposit or regulated product. Cask ownership is generally not a regulated financial product and is not protected by any deposit-guarantee or investor-compensation scheme.
- Currency risk. Prices are set in EUR (and ZAR for SA experiences); exchange-rate movements can affect value.
- The angel's share. A maturing cask loses volume to evaporation every year, the "angel's share"; the rate varies and you may bottle fewer litres than you started with.
- Storage & excise costs. After the included 5-year period (200L casks), annual bonded-storage fees apply, and excise duty and VAT fall due when the barrel is taken out of bond.

How does whisky cask investment work?
You buy an entire cask, new-make spirit in American oak, at the lowest point of its life. As the whisky matures, its value is driven by age and scarcity rather than daily markets. When you exit, you can sell the cask or bottle the whisky. Industry publications have reported historical sector returns of roughly 5.5%–20% per year; these are historical figures, not a guarantee, and values can fall as well as rise.
Where is my cask stored?
All investment casks are stored in government-bonded and insured warehouses in Germany, Ireland or South Africa until you choose to exit your ownership.
How do I take ownership, and how long does it take?
You receive documented title to a specific, numbered cask, set out in a written agreement before any payment. Transfer of ownership is typically completed within a few weeks of your order.
Can I sell my cask before it is fully matured?
In principle yes, you may choose to exit at any time by selling the cask onward or bottling it. However, cask ownership is illiquid: there is no daily market, finding a buyer can take time, and a sale at any particular price is never guaranteed.
What sizes and types are available?
Investment casks in 200L American oak (our flagship, and the only size that includes 5 years bonded storage), plus 100L, 50L and 25L take-home barrels. Spirit options run from blended partner whisky to our own B-Distillery single malt and bespoke ancient-grain casks (ancient grain is custom, 200L only). Custom cask types, sherry, French oak and more, on request. Brandy barrels are available through the Barrel Experience in South Africa. Purchase price is confirmed on enquiry.
What is the Golden Barrel Club?
