1882, at the Rolandsmauer
In the year 1882, Carl Kohlhoff founded the parent house of the Weinkellerei Kohlhoff at the medieval Rolandsmauer in Osnabrück. Growth came quickly: by 1884 the founder acquired new premises on the Schwedenstraße, right beside the old Curia of the Osnabrück cathedral canons.
Within those ancient walls, Carl Kohlhoff found something remarkable: recipes handed down from the era of the Peace of Westphalia. Using them, he began in 1886 to produce exclusive brandies and liqueurs, the same tradition of herb and spice recipes that connects directly to our Alter Schwede of 1648.
Barrels from the great wine houses
By ship, through the sea cities of Bremen and Hamburg, and by land along the old long-distance trade routes, the famous wine estates and winemakers of Europe sent their barrels of noble contents to the old Hanseatic city of Osnabrück, where the Kohlhoffs matured and bottled them with deep expertise. For generations, connoisseurs have associated the name Kohlhoff with exquisite wines and spirits from the best growing regions at home and abroad.
Since 1993, a new family, the same standards
The Kohlhoff family carried the house through the deprivations of two wars in the spirit of its founder. Since 1993, the Blomendahl family and its team of experienced oenologists and ambitious specialists have upheld the outstanding reputation of the house, justifying daily the trust of customers at home and abroad.
Today, KOHLHOFF, Weine und Liköre, since 1882 lives on at Marschstraße 12 in Vechta (having relocated from Visbek), under one roof with Blomendahl GmbH, and its distilling knowledge crossed the equator with us to South Africa.
